Brothers open new chiropractic office in Taunton

The economy is still tough, but two brothers with a local chiropractic practice have made a significant investment in their collective future.

After nearly 12 years in Raynham’s Cojean Plaza at 575 South Street West, Darren Eaton, 46, and his 42-year-old brother Shawn have relocated their Eaton Chiropractic to 109 Dean St. in Taunton.

“We needed to expand,” said Darren Eaton, who got his chiropractic degree in 1994.

Eaton said this Thursday’s grand opening would have come much sooner had it not been for a fire he says spontaneously combusted in a rear room last August.

The cause, he said, were contractor’s rags soaked with staining fluid that had been left in the room.

Luckily, he said, new foam insulation prevented the fire from spreading into the walls and ceiling — so that it instead burned downward into the basement.

But, he said, “it set us back six months.”

It could have been much worse. Eaton said the fire had been smoldering for about 24 hours before a passing Taunton police officer happened to notice rising smoke.

The Eatons say they paid $250,000 for the building and real estate, located on the heavily traveled Dean Street, and since then have invested another $250,000 into renovations that include modern therapeutic massage rooms upstairs, and a series of numbered chiropractic rooms on the main floor.

The brothers said they refinanced their building to help pay for the elaborate renovations.

“We gutted the place twice,” Darren Eaton said.

They are also now looking for both a qualified acupuncturist and esthetician to add to their existing list of services, which include deep-tissue and Swedish massage, Reiki and reflexology.

For now, the business employs a total of seven people — including two full-time massage therapists who have a sub-contracting agreement for using space.

A shower in one of the massage rooms is equipped with a steam room and there are also plans to add a dry sauna room. Darren Eaton says they all contribute to cleansing the body of toxins.

Darren Eaton said he’s especially proud of new digital, x-ray equipment that forgoes chemicals and allows for a close-up look at a patient’s spine.

The brothers, who grew up in West Bridgewater, teamed up in 2000 when they purchased the former Helmer Chiropractic office in Raynham.

Prior to that they both worked as associates for other practices — Darren in Seattle and Shawn in Methuen.

Darren Eaton lives with his wife and son in Berkley, while his younger brother resides with his wife and daughter in South Easton.

Originally built in 1900 as a private home, the 109 Dean St. building was later converted into professional office space.

Its previous tenant, former attorney Craig J. Martin, became the subject of scrutiny in 2010 when he acknowledged a misappropriation of $670,000 in client funds during real estate transactions.

Martin subsequently submitted an affidavit to the state Board of Bar Overseers stating his desire to resign from his profession.

The Eatons say they at one point considered buying a private home on South Street West, situated behind the Route 44 Benny’s store. But the visibility and access to traffic convinced them instead to relocate to Dean Street.

Darren Eaton said he’s also interested in working out an agreement with former Cojean Plaza neighbor Robert Burton, owner of Bright Morning Star Center for Healing.

He says he plans to purchase skin and herbal supplement products from Burton for his new office.

Eaton said the tough economy during the past few years has resulted in many patients either decreasing, or even ceasing, office visits once they’re convinced their problem has been remedied.

But he said he’s not concerned about any shortage of clients: “Everybody has a spine,” he said.

Baby massage sessions to improve health and happiness

    Published on Friday 18 May 2012 08:26

JUST relax, baby! Sunderland tots are being given the chance to relax as part of National Baby Massage Week.

The event, which runs until Monday, is promoting the benefits of baby massage to parents across the country.

Among those taking part is Wearsider Angela Paylor, who launched her own company, Karmazoo, to deliver baby massage sessions earlier this year.

To promote National Baby Massage Week, Angela organised free taster sessions in Washington and Sunderland to give parents an insight into what baby massage involves.

Angela, who lives in Washington, said: “I worked in a children’s centre for nearly 10 years and decided to take voluntary redundancy and start my own business teaching baby massage, baby yoga and pre-school fun exercise classes.

“It launched in January and is doing really well.”

Angela said baby massage is a way of giving children the very best start in life, mentally, physically and emotionally.

She said: “Our baby massage courses are suitable for babies from birth to crawling and have many benefits from helping with sleep, digestion and colic to encouraging bonding and interaction.”

National Baby Massage Week is being promoted by a number of organisations nationally, including the Guild of Sensory Development.

The guild says that in many cultures, infant massage has been around for thousands of years, but in the UK has only become popular in the last 11 or 12 years.

A spokeswoman said: “Infant massage is simple, free, can be done almost anywhere and has a host of emotional and physical benefits for both parents and babies, not forgetting grandparents and siblings.”

Karmazoo runs six-week courses in both baby massage, for youngsters from birth to crawling, and baby yoga, for babies 10 weeks to crawling, giving parents the skills so they can continue at home.

Contact Angela on 07792666712, email karmazoo@hotmail.co.uk or visit karmazoo.co.uk.

    Finding balance

Women today have the independence and financial freedom that was only dreamed about 100 years ago. We are making our own money, getting advanced degrees and we still want the traditional dream of a husband and family.

We want it all. But this is the challenge of the woman of the new millennium. How do you manage career and home life?

I have faced that dilemma with having my own business and having a husband and home.

Having your own business takes so much energy physically, psychologically and mentally that it leaves you drained and without energy to put into your relationship. This, however, will lead to problems in your marriage.

So how do you find that balance? It is possible but not easy – as the old saying goes where there is a will there is a way. According to marriage therapist Gregory K. Popcak, couples in marriages that fall into the exceptional seven per cent spend 15 hours a week together total – work together, and rekindle the romance. What changes do you need to make in your schedule to ensure that you get your 15 hours next week?

In the search for balance we need to take time for ourselves. If you are not feeling good physically, mentally and physiologically you will not have enough of yourself to give to others. You have not seen this column for a while because I failed to follow my own advice.

The curfew last year had me so stressed out that I was unable to function. I relearned the hard way that stress is a killer. It does damage to you that you do not even realise.

During that time the clients who came in were so tense!!! When we were doing the neck and shoulder massage on the clients’ trapezius muscle – this is the muscle on top the shoulder behind the collar bone- it was full of knots, some were rock hard. This muscle is where we feel a lot of our tension. You would be getting headaches every day if this muscle is so tense.

Massages helped me to cope during that difficult time and to bring me back to myself. The benefits of massages are so numerous. You may think of it as a cost – but what is your stress level costing you in terms of your sanity, your health and your relationships?

    The benefits are numerous:

A Bonding Experience for you and your significant other.

Do a massage course where you learn the basics of massage then you and that special someone can massage each other at the end of a stressful day. So instead of the stress tearing you apart – it will bring you together since you are providing comfort for each other. The popularity of “sensual” massages is due to the comfort that people feel during massage.

Think about it. The only time someone will touch you continuously for an entire hour is during sex. Humans crave touch. Touch deprivation on babies and older children has drastic effects some of which carry into adulthood. Touch deprivation leads to an increase in the production of cortisol the body’s stress hormone which can lead to increased stress levels, anger and depressive symptoms. Touch releases the hormone oxytocin – a hormone which encourages bonding.

    Pain Reduction

Massage is beneficial for reducing many types of pain such as lower back and neck pain. Instead of popping pain killers try regular massage. Anyone who has problems with muscular strain will benefit from a Swedish massage. The Swedish massage helps to improve the function of your lymph system by relaxing your muscles.

The lymph system works to move nutrient-filled fluids, and waste around your body. The fluid is moved only through voluntary movements from the muscles. Anyone who has problems from muscular strain will benefit from a Swedish massage. As the therapist relaxes the muscles, the lymph system will have the ability to flush out all of the metabolic waste from the muscles. This will help you to heal faster.

    Relaxation for Body and Mind

While a massage works great to help people who suffer from health conditions it also works wonders on people who suffer from everyday troubles and concerns.

There are many things in our life that can cause us to be stressed and worried on a constant basis. The more that we stress the more our muscles became tense and we find it hard to relax them.

The pressure used during a massage therapy help to relax the muscles and relieve the tension that has built up. The touch of the skin also helps to relax the person and to clear their mind of anything that might be bothering them.

Therapists suggest a Swedish massage to anyone who is feeling run down and on the brink of depression.

Massage helps you to put things into perspective since it will help to give you the energy that you need and help to relax your whole body.

Another benefit of the Swedish massage is its ability to help you sleep. Once you sleep your mind will be able to rest and your immune system will be able to work properly once again.

So take care of you – whatever challenges you are facing you can overcome it – just take it one second, one hour and one day at a time.

Sustainable Health & Wellness opens in The Mill at 2 Tunxis

    <!–

    –>

TARIFFVILLE — Farmington Valley residents looking for alternative routes to better health have a new option in the Sustainable Health Wellness center for vital living, in The Mill at 2 Tunxis Road, Tariffville.

The center opened April 2, with Dr. Dana Lapointe as director and a staff of nine, offering services including massage, acupuncture, reflexology, energy work, advance practice body work, yoga classes and a naturopathic apothecary.

Lapointe said the practice is a natural expansion of her one-room office, Peace on Herbs LLC, which she opened in August 2011 at The Mill.

“In my old space, I barely had room enough for a consultation area, exam room and apothecary,” she said. “I really needed more space to do bodywork, which I do for conditions including postural issues, old injuries that didn’t heal properly, chronic pain and fibromyalgia. Now we have 2,200 square feet, including five treatment rooms, a yoga/fitness room, apothecary and consultation areas.”

The bulk of Lapointe’s patients come in with endocrine issues, she said.

“That includes diabetes, pre-diabetes, hormonal health, weight issues, thyroid function and Wilson’s temperature syndrome,” she said. “I am aiming to restore optimal functions whenever possible, with use of herbs, supplements and vitamins, often working hand-in-hand with the patient’s medical doctor, to minimize use of pharmaceuticals whenever possible.”

LaPointe, who is certified in restorative medicine, is a licensed massage therapist and naturopathic doctor.

“I have been doing massage for more than 20 years, and I hand-picked the staff,” she said. “They all do deep tissue work and a range of modalities.”

Jessica Moore, of Enfield, is a licensed massage therapist at Sustainable Health Wellness.

“My focus is listening to people who have questions and concerns about the service we offer,” Moore said. “They can ask me questions, and everything is kept confidential. We tailor all massages to the client’s needs. We are here to assess them properly and come up with a treatment plan that will help the body heal itself.” Continued…

Evanston massage zoning plan draws wave of criticism

Dozens of people turned out at the Evanston Civic Center Wednesday night to object to a city staff plan to impose special use restrictions on massage therapists and similar professionals.

The wave of opposition, from therapists themselves and other groups and individuals, initially persuaded three of the six Plan Commissioners present that they should drop the effort to regulate massage through zoning entirely.

But a plea by the commission’s chair, Scott Peters, persuaded them to instead defer the issue for further discussion at their July 19 meeting.

Peters, a former prosecutor, said prostitution cases are very difficult to prosecute under criminal law and that zoning codes offer a much easier way to address the problem because standards of proof are much lower and the difficulties of proving a case are much less.

“Maybe all we need is a definition of what a massage establishment is, so that when someone is operating a house of prostitution and pretending to be operating a massage establishment, we can say, you’re not meeting the definition and are therefore in violation of the ordinance,” Peters said.

“It’s quicker, easier and more likely to be successful,” he added.

The staff had retreated somewhat by Wednesday night from its original proposal to require all establishments offering massage-like services to go through the city’s special use licensing process.

After complaints from the American Massage Therapy Association, which has its headquarters in Evanston, that massage therapists are state-licensed professionals, the staff proposal was revised to exempt them from the special use restrictions.

But it preserved the special use requirements for practitioners of nearly a dozen other body works therapeutic models, including the Shiatsu.

Steve Rogne, owner of Zen Shiatsu Chicago at 825 Chicago Ave., said the professional group he belongs to, the American Organization for Bodywork Therapies of Asia, has been lobbying the state for three years to establish a licensing procedure for his profession.

He suggested that bodyworks professionals could voluntarily submit to the criminal background checks and fingerprinting already required of massage therapists.

And he complained that the ordinance stigmatizes legitimate professionals by claiming that clustering massage and bodyworks establishments would detract from the character of the community.

Nancy Floy, who owns the Heartwood Center on Dempster Street, which houses dozens of professionals in massage, body work and other fields, said she had met Wednesday morning with Police Chief Richard Eddington and wanted to help stop prostitution problems in the city.

“But we don’t want our profession to be sacrificed in the name of stopping that,” Floy added.

Kaethe Morris Hoffer, legal director of the Chicago Alliance Against Sexual Exploitation, said that rather than using zoning laws, the city should “focus on the true root of prostitution — the demand side, those men who purchase sex.”

“It doesn’t take a degree in rocket science to figure out where to go to purchase sex,” Hoffer said. “If the johns can figure out where to go, so can police and law enforcement agencies.”

Dick Peach, the vice president for government affairs of the Evanston chamber of Commerce, said at least 22 chamber members would fall under the proposed ordinance and all are adamantly against it.

“It bothers us that in a community that supposedly is very proud of its small businesses, this ordinance turns around and stomps all over that reputation and impugns very good small businesses.”

Jeanne Lindwall of 625 Library Place, a urban planning consultant, said she’s thrilled that there are so many massage therapists and body workers in town.

“I’ve been getting massages over the last 10 to 15 years. They’re wonderful,” Lindwall said, adding that she doesn’t beleave the zoning ordinance is an appropriate mechanism for trying to address prostitution.

“Zoning is about land use,” Lindwall said, “Prostitution is an illegal activty and should be dealt with as such.”

Two prostitution busts over the past two years at spas or other establishments that claimed to offer massages were the trigger cited by city officials for the proposed new restrictions, which some officials say is part of a larger program to increase regulation of businesses in the city.
